QC University: Platt Moves In The Right Direction With Security

Foreclosurepedia has been covering the wide array of educational portals popping up recently targeted towards Contractor Training, for want of better words. Generally, I do not talk too much about the content of any given flavor of education as I figure this is more of an aspect of capitalism. In essence, if a Contractor and/or a Client wish to embroil themselves in education or anything, for that matter, more power to them. QC University was recently up on the radar; however, for a different reason. QC University, a Terry Platt – Gulf Thunder Corporation Production, recently began mainlining students and had a security issue. That issue was they were using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http) instead of Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (https). In and of itself, this isn’t the worst thing in the world. I mean the National Association of Mortgage Field Services (NAMFS) Regime does this and I have NEVER ENCOURAGED them to change because I am glad to see that their servers are defenseless. With respect to QC University, though, two problems presented: First, there were some innocent people involved and second, QC University was publicly displaying both the student’s names and their SQL Database File ID. This is pretty taboo especially when you are moving products for sale. Setting https deals with this in some ways.

SEAS and the companies that are encouraging the QC University effort are proud to support the recent addition of https to the University’s student portal. This vision of attentive detail to both safety and security comports with our desire to contribute and participate in a constantly evolving industry landscape. SEAS believes that QC University is both a healthy and viable educational option to compliment the current NAMFS educational opportunities. Recognizing the diverse subcontractor base in the Industry today, QC University represents yet another facet of SEAS’ long standing commitment to provide industry enrichment for the benefit of all.

That is a good way of putting things; the above from Kim Fatica over at SEAS LLC. I think it points out several important things to note. First, many folks believe I simply have an ax to grind with Platt overall. I do not; I do not agree with his ideology vis-a-vis as an initiate of the National Association of Mortgage Field Services (NAMFS) Regime. With respect to QC University, I believe it is a good thing in that options available to Contractors are a good thing.

Of extreme concern is the fact that QC University, in identical fashion as the National Association of Mortgage Field Services (NAMFS) Regime, seems to bestow upon itself legal language which borders upon misleading, at best. In all fairness, there is not a single Mortgage Field Services Industry Educational Model which is legally entitled to state that they are accredited in any way, shape or form with specificity to what is commonly referred to as Property Preservation. The reason for this is that there is no municipal, county, state or federal guidelines pertaining to a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code for the Industry.

Does this make QC University bad? No, as a matter of fact both the public facing information and private data within QC University’s servers — don’t ask — seem to be a pretty good attempt at preparing Contractors for an Industry which for almost three decades has simply muddled through things until a catastrophe has struck. Therein, lies the quandary. The biggest problem is that, to date, there has not been anyone whom has not had a financial motivation; not a single organization or association, to make the sale. The argument that the National Association of Mortgage Field Services (NAMFS) Regime is non profit and thus is unbiased is dead on arrival when you simply research Rob Preston and how the NAMFS Regime did him in over their Educational Platform. Perhaps even ask Brunswick Companies and Senior Vice President Michelle Hirsch. Platt is well aware of this as he and I originally discussed the matter several years back.

So, what is the solution? Well, tomorrow we are going to discuss a viable, long term solution. Accreditation by an impartial Board. What I mean by this is that a Board comprised of both Contractors and Clients alike which is apolitical in nature.

In the meantime, my hat is off to Terry Platt in making the switch to https. While it is not a 100% solution, it is pretty close to the best thing that we have available for the moment. It shows that Platt and his Sponsors are committed to the program which they are involved in. We are going to follow up on QC University in upcoming articles and hopefully interview some students to get a feel for it. In closing, I CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE the National Association of Mortgage Field Services (NAMFS) Regime to use http as it makes life so much easier for many.  😉

Before You Go ...

Foreclosurepedia exists because readers, workers, and advocates understand that protecting Labor in the mortgage field services industry requires independence, persistence, and resources. We do not answer to servicers, hedge funds, or corporate trade groups; our accountability is to the Field Service Technicians, Inspectors and administrative personnel whose livelihoods are too often treated as expendable. Donations are what allow us to investigate quietly buried contract changes, expose abusive labor practices, and publish work that would otherwise never see the light of day. Every contribution helps keep our reporting free from industry pressure and focused squarely on defending labor standards, fair pay, and basic dignity in the foreclosure ecosystem. If you believe this work matters, your support is not symbolic—it is the reason Foreclosurepedia can continue to stand between Labor and a system that routinely exploits it.
