Long awaited, WordPress Version 4.0 has been released. Now, I have been playing around with the WP Release Candidate (RC) 4.0 for quite some time and honestly wasn’t all that impressed. What people need to understand, though, is that ANYTIME you have an Update available, you need to get it installed. This is whether you are dealing with the Core — Core is what we refer to as the Core Software — or Plugins. The main reason for this is that Updates generally deal with two things: New Features and Security Tweaks.
One of the cool features is that WP goes PnP with the languages. In the past, it was necessary to manually accomplish this. As nearly 29% of all WP setups are in a foreign language, it was a tedious process. For the layman, what I am talking about is that most people think of coding in English — #logoleft {width: 93% !important;text-align: center !important; — which means that in a foreign language EVERYTHING is translated and compiled!
Embedding previews go WYSIWYG — What You See Is What You Get. This is cool as it was always a pain in the ass to fiddle around with the Visual and Text Editors and then Tab over and sometimes have to pop a new window with different Engines to see a decent preview. Vimeo and YouTube to Twitter, Hulu and Flickr all pop up in a real time setting to ensure you are getting that which you want. Media is now Grid View by default. Not a major coding accomplishment, but it makes the User Interface (UI) a bit more palatable.
The WP Plugin Interface stood out for me in that instead of the ugly, grey display, you get a great visual that pops! Additionally, the Post Editor finally got some attention. Prior to WP 4, it was a small area which although could be enlarged, it still was problematic. Most users will be pleased — especially the noobs — as unless you are up-to-speed with features or are a root level coder accustomed to terminal, the sizing was a real problem to me. Props for that! 😉 Rounding out the main changes was the subsectioning of the Widgets. When you run a plethora of them, the real estate to display them was difficult, at best.
